India is a land of strong cultural and religious beliefs. One of the most celebrated one-day festival is the Karva Chauth. Karva Chauth is a festival celebrated only by women. A strong belief and a number of stories are behind the celebration of this festival. However, the sole intention of this festival is to fast from sunrise to moonrise for the safety and longevity of husbands. This festival is majorly celebrated in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. The word Karva means pot and the word Chauth means fourth, which means the festival falls on the fourth day of the dark-fortnight of the month of Kartik.
The hypothesis behind the festival is that women whose husbands were in the Military would often leave their wives and children to go off to war. Hence, the wives would celebrate one day of socializing by preparing meals, and dressing up to celebrate a romantic evening with their husbands. A number of brides to be also participate in this festivals for their would be grooms. Also, women whose husbands were already on the war field would pray for their well-being and safety.
Another story behind this festival has a completely different perspective. Girls, who were barely teenagers would get married and go to a far off village, miles away from their home and family. Hence, for her to have someone to talk to about this new life and also to share any problems if she had with her husband or her in-laws, she would befriend another women.
Women, for years celebrated this festival and eat before sunrise. It’s a strict fast that doesn't allow one to eat or even drink water. The women await the rising of the moon. The women then sees the reflection of the moon in a vessel of water, through a sieve or through a dupatta, depending on the region. water is offered to the moon and then the woman sees her husband in the same manner as the moon. The fast is completed as the husband feeds the wife with a sweet.
